Lamborghini Hybrid Gallardo coming in 2015

It would appear that I now have a good reason to want a Lamborghini with the announcement of a new version of the Gallardo. This one is in hybrid form, and it is expected to roll out by 2015. The Lamborghini hybrid won’t be an all out green road warrior, as it will instead use a small electric motor when doing urban street driving, but will then bump up to using a 10 or 12 cylinder engine when going full speed. Don’t count on Lambo going completely electric anytime soon, but the Gallardo will certainly be a testing bed to see how these super luxury vehicles sell. Coincidentally, Ferrari is set to release a hybrid vehicle in 2015 as well.

Orbis, the one-wheeled Segway-like transportation device

You generally don’t see people on Segways in real-life, as they remain pretty much banned in the locales where they’d have the highest demand.
Well, perhaps the Orbis Urban Mobility Vehicle will have a better shot as mass adoption. Maybe. As you can see, it has one wheel, so it would take up a lot less space than crowded two-wheeled Segways. It’s also battery powered, so it is environmentally friendly with top speeds of up to 13 mph. It’s also super portable, as the handle can wrap around the wheel, which is pretty cool.

2010 Acura vehicles get Bluetooth, XM Radio, iPod connectivity as standard

Acura is looking to upgrade the experience for customers by adding a few oft-requested features as standard, starting with their 2010 lineup. Look forward to Bluetooth, XM Radio, and even iPod connectivity to all be included. This is definitely a sign of the times, as just about even mobile phone sold today supports Bluetooth, and that can only result in a bit more safety on the road.

Nissan Leaf: Zero Emissions, Total Affordability

I think we all know that cars are one of the worst polluters on the planet today, and so I find it nice of Nissan to introduce the greener Leaf, a car that has zero emissions. The Nissan Leaf has a lithium ion battery-powered chassis that is good for 160km (100 miles) on a single charge. Best of all, its lack of a tailpipe can reduce one’s “carbon footprint” significantly. I don’t have a price for it yet, but it should be “affordable” to the family of five that it has room for. The car is slated to launch late next year in Japan, the United States, and Europe.

Thank goodness all is well with NASA’s LRO and LCROSS. The LCROSS is already streaming video back to earth and will crash land on the moon Oct. 9 to look for water on the South Pole. The LRO just completed the last of its four engine burns and has settled into a comfortable orbit. It will be compiling 3D maps of the surface for about a year. All told, it will provide more data than any other mission.

Altitude’s Alex Tee and Evan Gant created a prototype of LightLane for a design competition to promote bicycle commuting. Their thought was that the bike lane should adapt to the cyclist as opposed to visa versa. The reaction was so positive that, although it did not win, it is becoming a reality nonetheless. The device attaches to the back of the bike and has both bright red LEDs and DPSS green lasers. It comes with a universal attachment bracket and phone charger.

Riversimple Car Uses Open Source Fuel Cell

Unveiled yesterday in London, the Riversimple car seats only two and runs on an open source fuel cell. Available by 2013, the car has a 240 mile range on its 1 kg hydrogen tank (equivalent to about 300mpg) and can zoom up to 50mph. The company that made the cell, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, says that it would be possible to lease it for about $315.00 a month. Compare that to the higher priced Honda FCX Clarity for $600.00 and the MINI E for $850.00 a month and it would appear that the company may have a hit on their hands.

Pioneer has 3 new in-dash GPS systems. At the low end is the 4.3-inch AVIC-U310BT, a voice controlled 2-DIN model with wireless capability and iPod/iPhone control at a price of $700.00. The mid-priced 5.8-inch AVIC-X710BT goes for $1,000.00 while the AVIC-X910BT comes at a cost of $1,200.00. Both have RCA outputs and built-in Bluetooth. The top of the line AVIC-Z110BT $1,800.00 unit has all the features that the other three have, gives map and route info simultaneously with voice control, plus HD and satellite radio capability, and a 7-inch motorized LCD screen.

Help out the little guy and help save the planet at the same time. A couple of German engineers got together to develop the Elmoto, an electric bicycle powered by a 2KW engine. The bike can go for 40 miles on a single lithium-ion battery charge that will only cost about seventy cents. Weighing only 45kg, the aluminum framed vehicle retails for $5,700.00. Because the Elmoto was made with no outside help or funding, the developers are trying to sell 100 globally by the end of this year and mass produce in 2010.
